Ethos
The work is concerned with vulnerability and strength and how everyday events effect our inner-self. Fluid rhythm suggests life and the preciousness of the porcelain conveys an essence of emotion and spirit. The deliberate delicacy and translucency of the finished pieces advocates fragility, although the material itself is strong, echoing our resistance to pressure and our in-built survival instincts. However, like the human form the work remains exposed and vulnerable to damage.
The making process exploits the weaknesses of porcelain, creating stress and tension throughout its formation. Delicate washes of ink penetrate the surface, bleeding into the voids highlighting their structure and imperfections, exploring notions of unpredictability and spontaneity such as in life. Pushed to its limits, contemplation allows one to question their being or non-being as they balance on the edge of existence.
